Logo Design Fails: Avoid These 10 Pitfalls!

Do you have what it takes to create a great logo? Are you up for the challenge?

It’s not just a matter of combining typography, a touch of colour and some photoshop skill. There is a whole lot more to it. A great logo should be simple, authentic and timeless, communicating in an instant the companies brand experience, think Nike, Starbucks, and Coca-Cola.

Most logos fail to meet these criteria, below is a list of pitfalls to avoid.

  • Be Cautious With ALL CAPS.
Upper and lower case letters are easier to read from a distance then All CAPS.
  • Use Punctuation Responsibly.
Nothing ruins a logo more than poor punctuation.
  • Let Your Fonts Do The Talking
Choose the right font to represent your brand personality.
  • Avoid Controversy As It Always Leads To Redesign.
Avoid popular trends as these come and go.
  • Don’t Be Inappropriate If You Want To Be Taken Seriously.
This can be damaging to the brand reputation.
  • Don’t Get Buzz For The Wrong Reasons.
Take a step back and look at your logo with fresh eyes, does it convey the right message.
  • Be Careful With Negative Space.
Look closely at negative space areas.
  • Be Wary Of Optical Illusions.
What you see, is not necessarily what others see. Once you have seen something you cannot un-see it.
  • Make Sure Your Logo Says What You Intended It To Say.
Get others to review your work, to ensure the right messages are being conveyed.
  • Choose Colors Carefully.
Your logo needs to work in black and white, it should not rely solely on colour.
